Overview: The Department of Prosthodontics has a limited capacity for the acceptance of Prosthodontic Fellows at our Health Science Center. The candidates for fellowship positions must have completed postdoctoral education programs with a restorative or prosthodontic clinical focus. Educational, clinical, and research opportunities in dental implants and all sub-specialties of prosthodontics are available. Our Fellowship Program consists of a period of one year followed by six month incremental extensions at the option of the fellow.

Objectives: Each individual Prosthodontic Fellowship Program at our Health Science Center is tailored to the specific educational and professional goals of the fellow. Each program, therefore, must be well defined in advance of fellow application and acceptance. A preliminary familiarization visit is extremely helpful in determining if the opportunities available in our Prosthodontic Fellowship Program meet the applicant's professional goals. It is possible for a fellow in a 24-month program to attain a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation.

The Fellowship Program has a clinical focus, but multiple didactic courses and seminars are audited by the fellow. The fellow may choose to limit his/her clinical interest to a sub-specialty area in prosthodontics or to maintain a broad interest in all areas of prosthodontics.

Facilities: Located on more that 100 acres in the heart of the South Texas Medical Center, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has approximately 2,700 students enrolled in the Health Science Center's five schools - the School of Allied Health Sciences, the Dental School, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Medical School, and the School of Nursing.

The Health Science Center has nearly 2 million square feet of education, research, treatment and administrative facilities. The University employs some 4,300 persons with a total annual budget if approximately $300 million.

State-of-the-art equipment, a faculty with expertise in all of the dental disciplines as well as the basic sciences, and an outpatient clinic which records more than 75,000 patient visits a year contribute to the superior advanced dental education programs at the UTHSCSA Dental School.

Almost 500,000 square feet in the Dental School building provides ample space for clinical cubicles, specialty suites, research laboratories, departmental offices, conference areas, and classrooms. In addition, the facilities of the Health Science Center, including its outstanding library, lecture halls, and computer support and learning resources services, are at the disposal of students and faculty. Interaction with ongoing basic science research in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, access to multidisciplinary laboratories, and rotations and clinical experiences in patient care facilities affiliated with the Health Science Center add depth to the curriculum of each program.

The faculty of the Dental School, which was founded in 1970, are drawn from across the nation and around the world. Many are board certified and recognized internationally as authorities in their field. They are the authors and editors of textbooks, leaders of national and international dental organizations, and researchers who continuously contribute to the literature and the body of knowledge in current dental sciences.

The Graduate Prosthodontic Program enjoys state-of-the-art facilities as well. A 16 operatory graduate clinic is conveniently co-located with the Graduate Prosthodontic dental laboratories, a 4 laboratory suite affording the resident the opportunity to gain optimal laboratory expertise. The Graduate Prosthodontic Program employees 2 full time laboratory technicians as well as 2 one-half time laboratory technicians who support the educational and clinical productivity needs of the residents. The state-of-the-art Prosthodontics Conference Room supports the academic and seminar needs of the postdoctoral students. This totally digital conference room including digital cameras, digital projection, and teleconferencing capabilities greatly aids the resident's education.

Suggested Support Equipment:

Clinical Camera: If financially possible, it will be to your benefit to acquire a clinical camera. Documenting clinical and laboratory work photographically is an important aspect of the critical evaluation of treatment outcomes. The accumulation of photographed clinical material will be very important for future professional presentations. A study club on the use of an intraoral camera will be presented during the summer semester.

Surgical Telescopes: Due to the exacting nature of clinical and laboratory prosthodontics, the use of optically fine surgical telescopes enables the fellow to perform at the highest level of accuracy possible. If financially possible, the acquisition of surgical telescopes, with or without prescription lenses, is a beneficial purchase. Magnification in the 2.5 to 3.5 range is recommended.
