Predoctoral Education in Prosthodontics
line

Overview

Predoctoral EducationThe Department of Prosthodontics totally supports the Dental School's concept of developing competent graduates. Accordingly, the goal of a competency-based academic program is to provide students with learning experiences that allow the integrated development of multiple components of competence. In competency-based dental education, what students learn is based on clearly described competency statements that outline the essentials for successful, independent, and unsupervised performance as an entry-level, general dental practitioner. To be certified for entry into professional practice, dental students must demonstrate that they comprehend, can perform, and integrate the essential skills, knowledge, and values without assistance in realistic patient care settings.

Though the Department of Prosthodontics is involved with all 17 Dental School competencies, it plays a significant role in contributing to and overseeing the development of dental students in the following areas:

  • Competency 01: Graduates must be competent in patient assessment and diagnosis.

  • Competency 02: Graduates must be competent in comprehensive treatment planning and assessment of treatment outcomes.

  • Competency 08: Graduates must be competent in the restoration of defective teeth to form, function and esthetics.

  • Competency 09: Graduates must be competent in the management of patients requiring replacement of missing teeth to form, function and esthetics.

The Department of Prosthodontics plays a significant role in both pre-clinical and clinical training of dental students.

  • Pre-clinical courses occur in the sophomore year and cover the disciplines of fixed prosthodontics, complete denture prosthodontics, removable partial denture prosthodontics, and implant dentistry.

  • Clinical prosthodontic courses occur primarily in the junior year and cover the disciplines of fixed prosthodontics, complete denture prosthodontics, removable partial denture prosthodontics, and implant dentistry.

  • Prosthodontic faculty directly support the training offered to dental students in the senior year, where a general dentistry model of training is used.

Predoctoral EducationCurriculum

The predoctoral prosthodontic curriculum is an integral part of the Dental Schools predoctoral curriculum. The Dental School's curriculum for each year of dental school can be found on the following University of Texas Health Science Center website: http://dental.uthscsa.edu/eduprog/default.html.

Clinical prosthodontics is taught via a General Practice Group concept. A prosthodontist, a restorative dentist, and 2 general dentists serve as the primary faculty for each of 8 groups of junior and senior students. Juniors assigned to a General Practice Group remain on that Group, becoming its seniors the following year.
